Pilates at the Kula

Ananda Kula is a fully-functioning Pilates studio.  The studio accommodates newcomers to the Pilates practice.  We encourage everyone to come and educate themselves about the benefits of Pilates as a means of therapy, rehabilitation, and a method for improving the effectiveness of one’s body.

Our system of Pilates is based on a circuit system.  Before being allowed to enter the circuit, students are given 2-4 free private sessions to assess their individual bodies and needs and training them on how to use the Pilates equipment.  When the student is ready for the circuit, they book their own, individualized time slots.  The Pilates instructors watch over clients in the circuit to ensure proper alignment is being used.

Pilates in General

Pilates is the name given to the physical system Joseph Pilates created nearly 100 years ago.  Born a sickly child, Pilates researched and studied many disciplines of physical practice from Greco-Roman wrestling to dance to yoga.  By his mid-teens, Pilates was a figure model highly sought after for his sculpted physique.  During World War I, he became a nurse and began inventing machines for injured soldiers so they could keep their bodies strengthened and toned.

Eventually, he and his wife, Clara, moved to New York and set up shop near a dance studio where Martha Graham practiced.  Pilates began to train New York’s top dancers, and the rest is history.  Pilates called his system ‘Contrology,’ but after his death his students renamed the practice to fit his surname.

Pilates is a physical practice designed to bring the body back into its natural, efficient alignment.  By using a combination of machines, props, and mats, classes are designed to fit a student’s individual needs.  By building core strength and practicing controlled stretching, a Pilates student learns to take their physical health into their own hands by learning efficient movement while correcting alignment
